Location: Endocrinology and Metabolism Ward of Integrative Medicine Hospital
It was time for the patients to have free activities every afternoon. We put on our volunteer uniforms and went to find some seniors to chat with. There was only one who was alone and we knocked on the door and came in. The grandma was about 65. She kept her distance when we first came in. She began to talk freely with us once we told her our purpose for coming. She told us she was born in Nanjing and had never left Nanjing her whole life. She had worked in a factory near the hospital until she retired. She had to leave the hospital as soon as possible because the medical bill was too expensive. It was still a heavy burden on her even though 75% of the medical expenses would be reimbursed. We felt a bit worried about what she said. She continued to refer to some social problems such as a high house price and education fee. We saw an old man talking with his son in the corridor, and we went to them. The old man told us he accompanied his wife to see doctor. He once was a worker in a factory and he had joined the Liberation War and Korean War, where his hand was broken in a battle. While talking, the grandpa referred to our plans after graduation and advised us to gain more practice in society before graduation so that we could be ready for work. The following article is about a visit to an elderly’s home in Nanking. The volunteers were organized under the leadership of Light of Love, an organization dedicated to rural health and education. -- Volunteers of the Light of Love program came to Yu Hua Tai District office to have the first session of training. The training began with ice breakers, through which everyone got to know each other. Then Dai Xianwei, the leader of Light of Love, explained the program. 26 students from different universities in Nanjing came to the activity center one after another at 1:30 pm. During the activities, volunteers were divided into 4 groups. They quickly became familiar with members of their group in 10 minutes. And then the representative of each group introduced members of his or her group. Everyone listened intently and took some notes. Though mistakes were made, the ensuing laughters eased any sense of embarrassment. The prop of the second game was a black plastic bag, used to cover participants’ eyes. The goal is to find one’s partner while blindfolded. Interestingly, the girls in the group proved much better at this game than the boys. There are lots of encouraging stories, each of us may become the hero of a story. Perhaps we all start projects with unrelenting passion and dedication, but it is often a challenge to keep up such devotion for months and even years? Once the excitement is gone, do we give up? We really hope all of us could persist and become successful pioneers in the field of public service. At 2 pm, three volunteers from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Nanjing University came to Endocrinology and Metabolism District of Jiangsu Province Integrative Medicine Hospital, accompanied by Dai Xianwei, the leader of Lighte of Love Non-profit Development Center. Help partners of the aged trust in each other and invite them to join activities 4. Accompany empty nesters in their houses and set up long-term accompanying plan 5. Keep in touch with these empty nesters They have set up personal growth files for each volunteer. It shows the growing process of each volunteer. They also made program progress forms which help us know which stage volunteers are in. With the help of Dai Xianwei, the three volunteers knew the hospital quickly. -- At 11:00 noon time, Lu Tang Primary school’s bell triggered the students’ appetite. The ravenous children rushed to eat lunch. When the volunteers walk into each classroom, they saw braised potatoes, mushroom and pork stir-fry, and seaweed egg soup. Everything smelled amazing! Eating the delicious food, the students’ faces exuded with happiness. When asked about how they feel about lunch, they all said: Delicious! In this 4th grade class, Cheng Shaomin seemed especially happy. A petite girl, who was adopted by her grandmother ten years ago, she never really felt loved by her parents. ever since she entered school, she has been very different from the other students. Every morning, she gets up at around 6:30, eating a very light breakfast or nothing at all. Then she heads for school. At noon, she watched her classmates consume their packed lunches from home with jealousy, though most of her classmates only had cold and poorly prepared items to quell their own hunger. As a result, she continued to get thinner. At the same time, She became cold, depressed, and alienated. Because of the work of Light of Love, Chang Shaomin and other 54 students can all enjoy a healthy and loving lunch. Her grades also improved overtime. Loving lunch not only helps Chang Shaomin, but also made other students feel the “Light of Love” shining. -- In April, 26 new members joined Light of Love, which brought new blood to us. The team became larger and larger, including the 9 principal members that joined the team last year. In order to help members know each other well and enhance the cohesion of our team, we held a training themed “ice-breaking trip”. The training began with interactive games. Before the activity, everyone needed to sign up and write his or her name on a sticker. Then they put the sticker on their left arms so others could see. The first game was called “Name Relay.” The member needed to repeat other members’ names before him or her. The purpose of the game was to help members remember each others names and be familiar with each other. Finally with the help of each other, no one was punished. When the last member spoke out all the names of members before her, we all applauded for her excellent memory. It takes Zhang Wei about an hour to walk from home to school everyday. During the winter, he has to leave home when it is still dark out. He used to bring the food from home to school. He would wait until school is finished, then take out the cold lunchbox to eat. Now he is one of the beneficiaries of the “Loving lunch” project. Every day after school, he can eat a warm meal. When Xu Wang and the teachers got to his home, they talked with his grandmother for a while. They provided her with the details of the “Loving Lunch” project. At the same time, they hoped that she makes sure to pay attention to the kids’ overall well being. The whole time, the grandmother repeated "Thank you, thank you".
